Police Rowing Club, Cairo

Many DRCers had the opportunity this this past summer to meet two Egyptian visitors to the club namely Moustafa and his father/coach, Hamza Tolba. Moustafa visited the DRC in order to train for the Henley where he made an admirable showing, placing 3rd in men's singles.
When Hamza learned that my husband and I were going to Egypt before Christmas he insisted that we pay him a visit which we did. We were treated to an insider's tour of the city and a traditional Egyptian feast at the Police Rowing Club on the Nile in central Cairo. The section of the Nile is not overly wide from the view of the club but the natives of Cairo certainly make good use of their great river. The rowing clubs are situated in the centre of the city where the banks of the Nile are flanked by tall office buildings, international hotels, luxury condos and tree lined walking and bike paths. We were able to watch fishing families who Hamza said live on their small boats along with a rather ambitious water skier who must have been dizzy from the constant circling that he was obliged to do. The highpoint was to see the rowers go by; a young woman in a single and a quad with a crew of seniors who apparently have been a fixture on the Nile for many years.
Hamza is committee chair of the Head of the Nile Regatta which will be held next December. He has extended an invitation for entries from the DRC and will give us priority for acceptance to compete at that regatta. I cannot recommend a visit to Egypt highly enough and encourage rowers to consider his offer.
Thank you again Hamza for your generous hospitality. I hope that you will spend time at the club again this summer.
