Mississauga Waterfront Festival
Scott Timpson

This weekend we have a great opportunity to give our club some great exposure to the crowds at the Mississauga Waterfront Festival. But we need your help...

We will attempt row-skiing from 10am - 10:45am on Saturday morning. Anyone who is not competing wants to attempt to make Don's history by pulling our skier (Jacqueline Garlow) is welcome. The row will be brief hard sprints...if we can get Jacqueline up for a few seconds we will get our photo-op and call the day a success. Regardless of outcome, we will turn a lot of heads and have some fun. We can switch rowers often, so everybody who want a try should get a try. Non-recs, please show up before 10:00am...Recs, please show up at the usual time, 9:00am.

Also at the Mississauga Waterfront Festival, we will have a single on display on the grass along with a ballot box for festival goers to enter a draw for a free LTR session. The on-grass display will be from about 10:00am - 2:00pm. Anyone willing to help out by mingling with the festival goers would be appreciated. So far Van and Mike, Kaye and Nancy, Johnny, Nancy W, Rick and Steph have volunteered. A few more volunteers would be great.

Both row-skiing and our booth at the Mississauga Waterfront Festival are great promotional opportunities for our club. If you are willing and able to lend a hand it would be greatly appreciated!

Regards,
Scott

Don Rowing Club Girls in London
Bernhard Stomporowski
Head Coach

The weeks of practising are over. Time to show what we have learned.

Claire, Jen, Elene, Alex and Chloe marched to London and put their pants down and met the girls of the Rowing Canada Team in London for a showdown. Saturday the smallboat day. Out of their big boat the girls showed the first clumpsy steps and have been proud to complete the field. 2000m later, a bail of cold water cleared the minds ... back home for more practicing, but rich in expierence. (Saturday afternoon the wonderful wedding of Laura)

Back in the evening. Flat water and ready for the training session before sunday the showdown of the big boats. Michelle, Al and all the other coaches doing a great job and have been very motivating to our girls, so that Jen, Elene, Clair and Alex went up in big selfconfidence to the start. The four, their home, was fighting - trying not to loose the contact to the national boats but its a hard price you pay when you try to stay too long by their side. But with a much closer precentage result then in the small boats the girls went away from this (hopefully not) unique weekend. A big icecream finallized the two days of shaking and we will have back our princesses in the credit river.

Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association Regatta 2009
Celena Crepsac

This year's Schoolboys regatta began on May 29th with the Senior Mens 2X race. Graham Watt and Avin Veerakumar represented their school, Appleby College. Graham and Avin rowed the best that they have so far this year, and had a great last 1000m but finished 4th in their heat. They had a strong finished but were edged out at the line by .5 seconds. They did not advance to the semi-finals but both felt that they had raced well.

Carter and Brandon Woodward also raced in the Senior Mens 2X race representing Hillfield Strathallan College. They came 4th in their heat and missed the semi-finals by the smallest of margins.

The next race of the day was the Senior Womens 2X. Katie Guest and Miruna Iona represented Etobicoke Collegiate. Although they don't train at the same club and have not rowed that much together they were able to make it through to the semi-finals. Their semi was a tough race with less than perfect rowing conditions. They did not advance to the final but were pleased that they had gotten through to the semi-finals.

Vanessa Beland represented her school, Humberside, in the Senior Womens 1X. This field was very strong. It was Vanessa's first single race and with such a strong field she was unable to advance. It was quite close and she only missed a spot in the semi-finals by a few seconds.

Saturday's racing started with the Junior Mens 2X. Kieran Tierney and Tom McMillan represented their school, Mentor College. They are a novice double and this was their second race. They rowed together better than the coaches, Ed and Celena, have ever seen. They passed a boat for the first time in a race, finished 5th in their heat and were happy with their row.

The last race for the juniors from the Don Rowing Club was Alyxandra Crepsac in the Junior Womens 1X. She, like Vanessa, was racing the single for the first time. The weather was not cooperating during this part of the day. The winds and waves were quite incredible. Alyx was a bit nervous but Ed reassured her that she could handle the water conditions. She had a strong last 1000m and was just edged out at the line by 1.5 seconds for 4th place in her heat. She missed the final by that margin and finished 7th overall.

Bernhard, Ed and Celena were all disappointed that Lorne Park Secondary School would not provide the athletes from their school a written letter stating that they were full-time students. Therefore all students from Lorne Park were not permitted by CSSRA to race.

The days were long for Ed and Celena but it was great to see lots of great high school races from Don Rowing Club athletes as well as super fast 8's from Shawnigan and EL Crossley!

The Rec. Report

Getting to know the Recreational Rowers of the Don Rowing Club!

Every month we will profile a couple of recreational rowers. This month features second year rower, Jane Jamnik and veteran rower, Patrick Vincent.

Introducing...Jane Jamnik
Jane is a rec rower, aiming to refine her technique in this her second year of rowing at the DRC. She was happy to win a race at last years' Tops and Bottoms Regatta in a women's' quad and hopes to get some glory again this year. She enjoys both sweeping and sculling and takes an interest in her neighbourhood, Port Credit. Jane grew up in the High Park area, attended U of T, and worked as an officer with a Highland regiment before moving to the south of France. Now she's back in Canada, and when not rowing, she enjoys traveling to far off places, playing tennis, camping and watching 'footy' (soccer). Jane is an ATM specialist working with Diebold, an international security and banking support company.

Best Quote: "Have an eye for open dock space."

Introducing...Patrick Vincent
I was introduced to the Don Rowing Club by my daughter when she was rowing for Lorne Park High School over 25 years ago. I now row with a group of people, most of whom are retired, at 7:30 am three mornings a week. We enjoy going out when the really early morning rowers are returning to the dock and there is little traffic on the river. Recently we were rewarded with a good view of a pair of deer just below the QEW bridge. They looked at us trying to figure out what we were doing and we looked at them for several minutes. I have been involved with touring in Ontario. The highlight was the FISA tour from Ottawa to Kingston in 2002, when about 85 rowers from all over the world came to enjoy the Rideau Canal system and its many locks. Another highlight was the tour on the Canal du Midi in South-West France last year, organized by club member, Henri Cohen. As I write this, I am about to go on the Black Fly tour in Northern Ontario. We stay for two nights in a waterfront lodge, with meals provided, and row on Saturday and half the day on Sunday.

Best Quote: "I recommend touring to anyone who enjoys moderate exercise in a variety of scenic areas with a convivial group of people."

Changes in boat and oar use
Bernhard Stomporowski
  • all the skulling oars are marked by numbers now, if you go rowing look that the numbers of the oars are matching
  • boats like the tubs (big singles) and boats like swan crasher and similiar boat hull have to use MACON blades (a "round" shaped blade), there are NO squared blades allowed anymore (except your own)
  • the boat michelle darvill is ONLY in use for Jen Martins and Elene Brett-Evans
  • the Jeff Lay is ONLY allowed to row by Alyxandra Crepsac/Isabella Cina and Heather MacDonald/Amber Oke - if you want to row this boat you have to ask ONLY the headcoach (in this case me)
  • the 1x cucciatti (lightweight and a black tape in the bowhull, nr. G76A08) has the oars nr.34 (they have a O'Neill badge on the oar and hanging in the end of the bay where the eights are)
  • if one oar is demaged, do NOT take just one new one, bring both oars in the repair bay, tape them together and leave a note whats damaged
  • after rowing, the boats have to be cleaned, the outside hull and when you see that something is dirty inside it is to clean also, NO cleaning NO rowing, if you do not have the time to clean (wash with soap) the boat ask somebody else
